Rotary Project as
on 13th Feb, 2013 - Slumber Kit Distribution |

|
The on-going annual project of distribution of slumber kit received from
SCAW was carried out on 13th Feb.
Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) donations provide bedkits to
children of any race and/or religion who will benefit the most; typically
being located in underdeveloped and developing countries.
No portion of a bedkit donation is spent on administration — 100% reaches
a needy child. Each *$35 donation
(Canadian
funds)
provides a bedkit that consists of a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet,
blanket, mosquito net (if
applicable),
clothes outfit, and school supplies. Bedkit contents vary from country to
country depending upon local needs.
Since its founding by Murray and Margaret Dryden in 1970, SCAW has raised
over $23 million to provide bedkits for children in 33
countries.
In 2009 they reached their millionth child.
Every child is photographed with the bedkit, showing the donor's
name/country (or special
occasion message) on a label. Each
photograph is then mailed back to the original donor, providing a timeless
way for the donor to remember the child who so greatly benefited from their
generosity.
For Mumbai area Rotary Dist 3140 carried out the distribution of 2000 kits
received from SCAW. Our club was allotted 51 kits which were to be given to
class 1 & 2 students of Kurze Ashramshala.
The distribution centre was in Dahanu.
Dada, Yashwant, RAjendra Tamhane and I reached Kurze at 7.30 am. Two
mini-buses were arranged to take the children (with 3 teachers) to Dahanu.
Rtn Rajesh Samant and Pres Rakesh Mishra of RC Boisar Tarapore were
instrumental in arranging these buses from Manor resulting in savings in
cost of hiring transport. We reached Dahanu at 9.30. A team of 8 Canadian
volunteers from SCAW came to oversee and photograph the distribution. The
local school children put up a small cultural presentation for the benefit
of our foreign guest. Then the kits were distributed to children of various
schools attached to RC Borivli, Dahanu, Boisar-Tarapur and North End.
The project ended around 1 pm and the happy children went to their
ashramshala in the bus and we headed back to mumbai.
In order to reach Kurze at 7.30 am we had decided to go on 12th evening and
stay overnight at Rtn Bhavin Anandjiwala's bunglow at Wada. Bhavin was an
excellent host and Good fellowship was enjoyed by all
A very satisfying project
